Fire Moves In on Neighborhood, Later Shifts Away

TAOS PUEBLO -- An aerial attack Monday afternoon slowed the 4-day-old Encebado Fire as it surged toward the Canon Heights neighborhood in the eastern foothills of Taos.

The Forest Service reported that the fire moved within three miles of the neighborhood's northern edge Monday afternoon, as hot afternoon winds pushed the 2,500-acre blaze south of its origin on rugged Taos Pueblo wilderness.

But the fire later shifted away from the subdivision.

While the fire is 5 percent contained, no homes appeared threatened late Monday.

The fire is burning primarily on Taos Pueblo land, two to five miles east of Taos and north of U.S. 64, the east-west route through Taos Canyon. It continues to move away from Taos and Taos Pueblo.

A Canon Heights woman didn't have much time to talk late Monday afternoon. …
