The federal agency in charge of paying claims from the Cerro Grande Fire has written checks worth nearly $15 million to insurance companies that compensated victims of the May 2000 blaze.

"Initially they were very concerned until they saw it actually coming; it's so great that the check is in the mail," said Steve Oliver, director the claims program for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Paying "subrogation" claims -- money paid by insurance companies to their policyholders who lost homes and personal property in the fire -- had been put on hold for at least two years while FEMA distributed money to other claimants. …
