Residents Told to Be Ready to Clear Out.(Journal North)

TAOS CANYON -- Residents along U.S. 64 east of Taos should prepare for possible evacuation caused by a forest fire burning just a few miles to the north, fire officials said at a neighborhood meeting Monday night.

Authorities will warn the canyon's 125 residents of evacuation hours in advance if possible, but time and stress could be saved if people were prepared to go, fire officials said at a meeting in the Rio Fernando Volunteer Fire Station.

"Pack a car," Captain Quintin McShan of the New Mexico State Police suggested.

The fire was burning about two miles north of U.S. 64 at one point on Monday, said fire commander Bob Lineback. …
