Close Call For Canon Heights

TAOS, SANTA FE BLAZES

TAOS PUEBLO -- The Encebado Fire jumped firelines and burned 75 acres as it surged toward the Canon Heights neighborhood in the eastern foothills of Taos on Monday afternoon.

The fire moved to within three miles of the neighborhood's northern edge, as hot afternoon winds pushed the 2,500-acre blaze south of where it began on rugged Taos Pueblo land. The fire, under aerial attack, later shifted away from the subdivision.

"The good thing about that is we still think it's relatively low on the mountain and we think we can get around it with 'dozers," fire commander Bob Lineback told more than 100 people at a neighborhood meeting at the Rio Fernando fire house later that night.

The fire is 5 percent contained, and no homes at Taos Pueblo, in Canon Heights or in the Taos Canyon appeared to be threatened Monday night. No evacuations were ordered.

However, fire officials caution that fire behavior and weather patterns are highly unpredictable; evacuation plans were prepared in advance if the fire jumps lines and takes a new course today or later in the week. …
