1,500-acre blaze on Taos Pueblo land is putting watershed, sacred lands at risk

TAOS PUEBLO -- The 1,500-acre Encebado Fire burned east toward Angel Fire and continued to threaten tribal religious areas of the Taos Pueblo on Sunday afternoon.

After a comparatively calm day Saturday, the fire surged again about 2:45 p.m. Sunday. Its front was about 12 miles west of Angel Fire and more than three miles north of Taos Canyon, a populated area along U.S. 64.

The fire was uncontained Sunday evening, and it remains entirely on Taos Pueblo land, spokeswoman Terri Wildermuth of the fire management team said. The changing situation made it difficult for her to discuss possible evacuations of nearby homes, she said.

Crews were working from anchor points or cleared areas of fire line on the west end of the fire built over the weekend by some of the 300 firefighters and support staff. …
