Three scientists gathered under a white-domed observatory in Socorro on Thursday night to photograph an asteroid far too faint to see with the naked eye.

As they worked in darkness to align the telescope, they made small talk about the day's research and an approaching cloud bank that threatened to block their view of the asteroid.

Then a cell phone rang, interrupting the conversation.

"It was my dad," said Aaron Eisman, of Connecticut. "He just wanted to see how I've been doing in the program."

These scientists, it should be noted, are 17-year-old high school students. …
