Lab spinoff turns to SUCCESS.(Business Outlook)

Tech-transfer firm TPL Inc. mines weapons for materials to use in industry

Twenty-two years after becoming one of the first spinoff businesses out of Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque's TPL Inc. has accomplished some remarkable things.

They include:

* Developing an animal feed -- tested on a sheep nicknamed Shaboom -- derived from nitrogen extracted from dismantled munitions.

* Turning dismantled artillery shells and other munitions into products for mining, fireworks and other industries.

* Making gun barrels that are almost completely resistant to corrosion.

* Creating a system of "smart" munitions that stay inactive until they leave a particular area, such as an artillery shell fired from a tank.

TPL also is developing medical biosensors, micro batteries, and integrated optical devices for the medical and telecommunications industries.
