* British soprano delves into character of tempestuous wife

SANTA FE -- British soprano Judith Howarth has sung leads in many major opera productions, but never has she had to make so many costumes changes so fast in a single opera. Until now.

Howarth portrays the female lead of Christine in the Santa Fe Opera production of Richard Strauss' domestic comedy "Intermezzo." The first of five performances will be Saturday, July 12.

"I've never had to change 10 times," Howarth said.

And lickety-split.

She has sung, among others, "La Boheme," "Rigoletto" "Turandot" and "Don Pasquale" at the Royal Opera and "La traviata," "The Pearl Fishers" and "Nixon in China" at the English National Opera.

Howarth made her Santa Fe Opera debut as Aithra in Strauss' "The Egyptian Helen" two summers ago. …
