PHOENIX -- Gov. Bill Richardson was touted as a possible Democratic vice presidential nominee at the nation's largest gathering of Hispanic elected officials here last weekend.

Richardson, who continues to insist he has no national ambitions in 2004, said he was honored by the attention, but uninterested.

"That was flattering," Richardson said in an interview at the annual conference of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, or NALEO. "But I'm very clear that I'm running for re-election as governor" in 2006.

It's also very clear that Richardson is positioning himself as a major player in the national political arena, with a possible eye on the White House in 2008. …
