Cafe's Use Of Alley Sets A Bad Precedent.(Journal North)(Editorial)

The Santa Fe City Council last week voted to allow the owners of Cafe Paris to open 18 tables outdoors -- in Burro Alley.

The decision is no doubt a welcome one to New Urbanism fans, of which Santa Fe has many. New Urbanism is all about pedestrian-friendly city streets, as Burro Alley has become since cars were banned a few years ago. And it's about mixed uses -- Burro Alley will now be both a pedestrian thoroughfare and an outdoor cafe. The latter use also reflects the New Urbanist's love of the seasonal -- Cafe Paris' outdoor dining permit runs through the summer until Sept. 30, about the time the weather begins to make outdoor dining unattractive. …
