Leno to speak on Afghan women

Mavis Leno will speak on racial justice and the plight of Afghan women at a YWCA benefit lunch Sept. 16 at Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, 330 Tijeras NW.

The program, sponsored by the Albuquerque Journal's SAGE Magazine, is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Advance tickets are available for $50, which includes lunch, by calling 254-9922. Reserved tables are available for $500. Proceeds from the event will support new racial justice initiatives of the YWCA of the Middle Rio Grande.

Leno has been an outspoken critic of the Taliban's horrific treatment of women in Afghanistan. She is chair of the Feminist Majority Foundation's Campaign to Help Afghan Women and Girls.

She became chair of the Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan in 1997. She has testified in Congress on gender apartheid.

She is also the wife of The Tonight Show host Jay Leno.

Her current efforts are directed at restoration of women's rights in post-Taliban Afghanistan, and she continues to keep the topic alive through many national television appearances and newspaper and magazine interviews.

Leno's talk will be especially timely in light of ongoing violence in the Middle East, said YWCA executive director Sitara Harvey-Cook. …
