Teams Follow Illegal Fireworks Trails.(Final)

Darkness was still an hour away when a steady clatter of fireworks echoed throughout the neighborhoods of Southwest Albuquerque on Friday night.

Lt. Andrew Chavez and Fire Inspector Bill Armijo of the Albuquerque Fire Marshal's Office rolled down their windows to look, listen and smell for illegal fireworks.

"It's like a cat-and-mouse game," Armijo said, as the two veteran officers drove slowly down residential streets in their unmarked sedan.

Chavez and Armijo were one of 10 fireworks-enforcement units that were scheduled to patrol sectors of the city in search of illegal fireworks until 2 a.m. today. …
