Crews Idle Until Morning

What had been a quiet wildland fire season in northern New Mexico took a dramatic turn for the worse Friday with the outbreak of the Ensebado Fire, which by 9:07 p.m. had burned between 500 and 1,000 acres and had advanced to within a half-mile of Taos Pueblo land north of the town of Taos.

The blaze was moving fast Friday night, with flames reaching as high as 100 feet and leading police to ask residents north of Kit Carson Road in Taos to voluntarily evacuate their homes and seek shelter at the National Guard Armory.
