* State high court says Richardson can remove previously appointed members

SANTA FE -- Gov. Bill Richardson has the authority to remove previously appointed members of the Judicial Standards Commission, the state Supreme Court ruled Wednesday.

At issue in a lawsuit filed by some members of the commission was whether Richardson exceeded his authority earlier this year when he asked for the resignations of the board's six lay members.

The court in a 3-2 decision held that the state Constitution grants a governor that power.

The high court "would be overstepping its bounds to impose a limit on the governor's removal authority when the Legislature has imposed none," Chief Justice Petra Maes wrote. …
