Audit Critical Of Some Spending

A city audit says the police department was on track to finish the fiscal year with less spending than its budget would have allowed.

Nevertheless, there were some problems, notably in a program that has paid for furniture and retirement-party cakes. That prompted criticism in the audit report, and Councilor Greg Payne said it raises questions about discretionary spending that could have been avoided.

In the past, overspending by the police department has sometimes caused financial problems for the city. But this time, in the first full year under Mayor Martin Chavez, the department was expected to spend $393,000 less than its approved budget of $86. …
