Official Suggests Big Cities Lease Water From Estancia Valley.(Mountain View)

Water -- we all need it, but not everybody has it.

Two of New Mexico's most populous cities, Albuquerque and Santa Fe, need all the water they can get, and State Land Commissioner Pat Lyons says a good source would be the Estancia Valley.

Lyons said the two cities should consider piping in water from the underground aquifers in the Estancia Basin.

The Estancia Basin is a 2,400-square mile area extending from north of Stanley south into Lincoln County. On the basin's west border lie the Manzano Mountains; on the east, the Pedernal Hills.

Lyons said he was approached by a group of Estancia Basin water rights holders who are interested in leasing their water rights for this purpose. …
