East Mountains Guidelines in Place Should a Wildfire Break Out

Recent fires in the Rio Grande bosque in Albuquerque have prompted local fire officials to examine their own preparations to fight wildland fires.

Officials in the East Mountains and Estancia Valley, where the threat of wildfire almost always hovers, say they are ready.

Fire prevention is important, local officials say, and so is readiness to fight a wildfire. But as the bosque fires demonstrated, it is also vital to be able and prepared to get people out of the area in case there is a fire.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department and local fire agencies have created an evacuation plan for the East Mountains area in case disaster does strike.

The sheriff's department will be responsible for coordinating evacuations while firefighters from a variety of agencies work to douse the flames. …
