Treatment Still To Be Available

After four years of service, a drug treatment organization is considering whether to stay in Espanola.

Still, officials say free health care for heroin users in Rio Arriba County will continue, no matter who's awarded a contract later this summer.

"We're considering what's best for the community," said Karl Moffatt, a spokesman for Amistad de Nuevo Mexico, a nonprofit corporation. "We have yet to make a decision."

He added: "It's a very hostile environment to work in both politically and from a drug problem standpoint. It's been a very difficult task."

Amistad has until July 16 to apply for $807,500 in state money. …
