Innovative Jazz Flutist Mann Had a Passion for the Music.(Journal North)(Obituary)

Prominent flutist Herbie Mann, an innovator in fusing jazz with the music of Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil and Eastern Europe, died at his home in Pecos late Tuesday.

Mann was 73 and had been battling prostate cancer since 1998.

His last performance was in early May at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

"That performance was a huge testament to the human spirit. He was in a very weak state," said his widow, Janeal Arison.

Mann's first album to reach the pop charts was "Live at the Village Gate" in 1962. That was the first of 25 of his recordings as leader to reach Top 200 pop-album status, a sign of his commercial success. …
