An East Central homeless shelter tailored to veterans in need is closing its doors after two years.

On Tuesday, Rehabilitation Services and Veterans Programs ended operations of its homeless campus at the former Sundowner Inn, an old Route 66 motel cleaned up for veterans who stumbled onto the streets. Organization president and chief executive officer Marty Cordova said the shelter is closing voluntarily, citing recent public criticism of the operation.

"I think it's a sad day for New Mexico," Cordova said Tuesday, noting the shelter helped bring in about $1 million of federal funding annually. …
