The saying used to be, "Don't call us, we'll call you." But an estimated 10 million Americans -- tired of being bugged by telemarketers -- have simply said, "Don't call us, period."

When the national do-not-call registry opened for business Friday, it received a tidal wave of calls -- up to 1,000 a second -- during its first four days, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Telemarketers are prohibited from calling people who sign up on the do-not-call registry. New Mexico's registry law, which resembles the federal law, is also now in effect. …
