Last week's traumatic bosque fire has triggered some predictable responses. Amid the examples of dedicated firefighters and the local residents and businesses who provided them with support, elected officials moved quickly to douse the possibility of a sequel fire.

With the Fourth of July holiday right around the corner, Rio Rancho and Corrales officials passed fireworks bans during emergency legislative sessions late last week. Reports that firecrackers may have ignited at least parts of the bosque fire no doubt added extra urgency to these actions.

But while Rio Rancho chose to operate within the procedural parameters laid down by state law, banning only larger fireworks, the Corrales Village Council unanimously passed a blanket prohibition. …
