Area Could Get New Nuke Plant

POJOAQUE -- Michael Mitchell might as well have been talking to a wall.

As the project manager for a proposed new nuclear weapons plant, he was trying to explain to a room of more than 200 people why the factory, which could be sited in Los Alamos or Carlsbad, is needed to build replacement parts for the nation's nuclear stockpile.

"As long as nuclear weapons are part of the national nuclear posture, they need to be maintained," he said.

The crowd Mitchell was addressing -- people from local pueblos, Espanola, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, among other places -- were, in fact, trying to function as a wall, hoping to block the proposed plant from being built in New Mexico, or anywhere else for that matter. …
