Communities Curb Fireworks.(Final)

Many New Mexico communities are cracking down on fireworks and open fires to prevent replays of the fires that ravaged the Albuquerque bosque last week.

The bosque was still smoldering Thursday when Gov. Bill Richardson banned fireworks on all state lands and urged New Mexico mayors to ban or limit what they could.

Not long afterward, the Corrales Village Council voted to ban all fireworks and open fires, despite knowing that by law it can't forbid use of "safe and sane" fireworks completely.

Councilor Laurie Rivera said the fire danger outweighs the risk of possible legal action.

"Our attorney told us the financial consequences wouldn't pose much of a risk financially, so we passed it," she said. …
