* Scottish games require strength, speed, technique -- and maybe a sense of humor

Too much whiskey and one too many pints of stout at the ceilidh (kay'-lee), Gaelic for party, have been the downfall of many a man.

I'm no exception. It was at the Saturday night party cum sing-a-long at the Rio Rancho Highland Games and Scottish/Irish Festival that I found myself agreeing to don a kilt and toss telephone poles and boulders with the big boys.

The games were held earlier this year to accommodate regional games being held in Colorado in the fall.

"We had to move it from our usual time in October," Athletic Director Joe Harris said. "We are now the games of record for the state."

He said the games are sanctioned by the Rocky Mountain Scottish Athletes Association, a nationally recognized amateur athletics association. …
