Carlsbad Pushed For Pit Plant

In the competition for a new nuclear weapons factory, Carlsbad Monday officially gained two powerful allies who could help bring the proposed plant and an estimated 1,000 jobs to the southern New Mexico town.

The state's two U.S. senators, in a show of bipartisan support, formally endorsed building in Carlsbad the proposed Modern Pit Facility -- intended to make the cores or plutonium "triggers" of nuclear bombs. The Department of Energy held a public hearing on the pit-building plans in Carlsbad Monday evening.
