* Cabaret-style concerts at Vanessie will offer lighter fare

The Santa Fe Desert Chorale's 21st season will mark a special anniversary and a new direction for the vocal ensemble.

The new direction is a series of three informal concerts called Cocktails with the Chorale.

Giving impetus to the trio of concerts are 1) private "thank-you" cabarets for Desert Chorale friends and supporters and 2) the late-evening singing of some of the chorale's 20 singers.

After some past Desert Chorale concerts, singers would go to Vanessie, a popular Santa Fe restaurant-bar, to eat and to sing Broadway tunes with resident pianist Doug Montgomery.

The cabarets and the post-concert singing at Vanessie converged in the mind of chorale artistic director Dennis Shrock. He decided to present the cabaret-style concerts that are open to more people and that would earn money.

"In these economic times it would not be responsible to not take advantage of that," Shrock said. …
