It is that season again when publicists at the commercial houses invariably anoint so-called lightweight summer reading as "beach books." "Lost Light" is far from lightweight but it's a police procedural that you will want to wrap yourself around in the shade of a friendly sycamore.

It is the latest winner, already a best seller, in Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch series.

Bosch is now retired from the Los Angeles Police Department, but his conscience won't allow him to leave the sleuthing behind. The unsolved murder of a young woman, Angella Benton, four years before, drives him to probe the case on his own. …
