Group Discusses Solutions to Water Shortage.(Final)

On a recent Saturday, in a conference room at the Intel plant near Rio Rancho, 30 volunteers and experts pushed the Middle Rio Grande Valley a little closer to a sustainable water supply.

Armed with a computer model designed by Sandia National Laboratories, they did more than just talk about conservation ideas. They tried them out -- punching ideas into a computer, crunching the numbers and watching how much each action helped or hurt the regional water supply over the next 50 years.

It was one meeting among many since 1998 as part of an effort to create a regional water plan.

"We're in a desert, and we have to start acting that way," said Bob Wessely, chairman of the all-volunteer Middle Rio Grande Water Assembly.

The assembly and the Mid-Region Council of Governments are working together on the plan, which will be submitted to the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission later this year. …
