Santa Feans, like other Americans, have that option in most aspects of their lives. Now, city leaders want to add to that list, allowing residents to be able to water when they want.

So, in order to allow for this freedom, local officials are proposing a household water budget for residents.

On Saturday, the first of four public forums was held at Santa Fe Community College to discuss just that -- budgeting the water use of residents -- as part of the day's Water Fair.

Basically, the water budget would set a baseline per household of 55 gallons a day. …
