* Maes receives state award for accomplishments

New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice Petra Jimenez Maes was awarded the state's first Distinguished Hispanic Accomplishment Award on Friday.

A documentary on her life was shown during a ceremony and banquet held in her honor at the Sheraton Old Town hotel. It was produced by the University of New Mexico's Center for Regional Studies.

The film featured her entry into the field of law, her advance into the judiciary system and her eventual rise to the position of New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice.

The 55-year-old was the first Hispanic woman in the nation to be named chief justice of a state Supreme Court. …
