Endangered Fish Get Frisky in Their New Home.(Final)

Refugium Mimics Natural Habitat

Freed from their usual aquarium, hundreds of endangered silvery minnows began feeling frisky last week during their first night in a new home.

The Rio Grande Silvery Minnow Refugium -- unveiled to the public on Friday -- was an instant hit with the fish, who spawned their first night in the lap-pool-like complex, which imitates their natural habitat.

"The Barry White recordings are complimentary of the Mayor's Office," joked Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez, who was on hand Friday to open the project.

The $1.7 million refugium, believed to be the first in the country for an endangered fish, will make it easier to research and breed the minnow. …
