* Dan Simmons led Rio Grande's girls to a state title -- one of only three ever won by the school

"It was kind of nice to see some of the kids; they're growing up. We visited for a couple of hours." Dan Simmons still hasn't officially coached a girls basketball game in New Mexico since his Rio Grande Ravens won a state title in 1998.

But he seems to be getting closer all the time.

Simmons, one of the co-founders of the I-25 summer basketball series in 1995, is back for the 2003 version in Albuquerque this weekend with his current team -- Midland (Texas) Lee.

Shortly after the Ravens beat Gallup 40-38 on March 7, 1998, for the Class 4A crown, Simmons took the girls basketball job in San Marcos, Texas. …
