Police Say Teens Threw Fireworks, Lit Debris


One of three teenage boys accused of starting Tuesday's bosque fire was heard bragging the next day that he started the blaze while playing with firecrackers and when the boys tried to extinguish it, they were too late.

Upon returning home later Tuesday and seeing the raging fire on TV, one of the boys said, "(expletive) what did we do?" according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed in state District Court on Friday.

The boys, Ricky Navarrette, 16, Fernando Anaya, 13, and Steven Sedillo, 13, were taken into custody at 10 p.m. Thursday and questioned. They were booked into the juvenile detention center early Friday morning on charges of arson and criminal damage to property. Sedillo was also charged with tampering with evidence.

All charges are felonies.

Tuesday's blaze, now called the Atrisco Fire, destroyed 350 acres of the bosque and caused hundreds of people to flee their homes.

On Wednesday, a second fire -- believed to be arson -- replayed the drama of smoke, flames and evacuations. …
