Guardsmen Happy To Help Out With Patrols in Bosque


"In two days, I've had about five hours of sleep," Spc. Danny Lopez said Friday. "I feel great though. These are the times I truly remember why I joined the National Guard."

Lopez, a Guard cook from Albuquerque, is just one of several hundred New Mexicans who were deployed to the Albuquerque bosque to help fight the fires and who are staying on to enforce the state-ordered closure of the popular green belt along the Rio Grande.

"I'll be honest with you, I'd rather be doing this than serving chow in an MKT (mobile kitchen trailer)," Lopez said. …
