The story has all the drama of a Beethoven symphony: The New Mexico Symphony Orchestra went from being more than $1 million in debt and two paychecks behind in 1997 to debt-free and collecting on a $4 million endowment in 2003.

But only a handful of people know the real score.

On Sunday, about 40 of those people gathered for a Spanish-themed luncheon on the sun-dappled lawn of financial planner Brad Day and his wife, Kathy Day, to honor those who contributed at least $10,000 to the symphony endowment.

Day and Albuquerque CPA Carl Alongi, a longtime symphony board member, launched the endowment campaign, which provided a transfusion for the symphony, allowing it to get out of debt. …
