A Close Call

With only minutes to collect their thoughts and some belongings Wednesday night, hundreds of residents who fled the bosque fire returned overjoyed to find their homes still standing Thursday.

Some found ashes and burned leaves on their patios and decks. Others came home to broken tree branches strewn about their properties, probably caused by the powerful blasts of water firefighters used to wet down yards.

That they had something, anything to come home to was more than many expected.

"It was all OK, and we were all OK," said Nancy Houghton. "I hated to be a pessimist, but when I looked out our dining room window Wednesday and saw flames that looked 100 feet high and they looked like they were nearing my back yard, I felt a bit of doom, quite honestly. …
