Though Albuquerque residents mourned the loss of precious bosque acreage this week, they expressed relief Thursday in the discovery that what mattered most -- homes, family and friends -- emerged from the smoke and flames virtually unscathed.

The Montano Fire, the second in two days in the bosque that straddles the Rio Grande, burned about 165 acres. The Atrisco Fire burned about 350 acres on Tuesday.

Firefighters were lauded for their tireless efforts and overwhelming successes and praised for saving lives and possessions. …
