Exhausted firefighters and worried residents breathed easier Thursday after the second fire to erupt in the Rio Grande bosque this week was mostly contained.

Crews battled the blaze throughout the night after it broke out near the Montano Bridge about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. No homes or buildings were destroyed, but hundreds of residents were evacuated.

Joined early Thursday morning by helicopters dumping buckets of water on the flames, firefighters had the fire under control by mid-morning. A small flare-up occurred Thursday afternoon but was quickly extinguished.

Most evacuees returned to their homes Thursday.

The first fire started Tuesday afternoon just south of Interstate 40 and raced north on both sides of the Rio Grande, charring hundreds of acres. …
