Fire a Home Wrecker for Many Critters; Minnows OK.(Final)

Birds, rabbits, snakes and other wildlife that managed to escape the flames of the bosque fires likely are searching for new homes.

The fires that raced through hundreds of acres of trees and shrubs along the Rio Grande in Albuquerque this week probably destroyed some bird nests and denning sites for small mammals, but there still are places for them to go, experts said Thursday.

Biologists are not worried about the fire's impacts on habitat for the endangered Rio Grande silvery minnow or Southwestern willow flycatcher.

The bosque is home to a wide array of wildlife from birds and bats to snakes and lizards to coyotes, rabbits, mice, porcupines, skunks and ground squirrels. …
