"When you think you have the wolf by the tail, that's when the fire gets you," says firefighter David Halmi.

Halmi of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota and his 20-member crew were among firefighters from throughout the state and around the country who converged on Albuquerque to help exhausted local firefighters.

Albuquerque Fire Chief Robert Ortega said at least 150 firefighters joined his crews.

"It's good to see them responding like they did," he said. "Brother to brother -- that's the way it is in the fire service."

On Tuesday, Los Ranchos firefighter Brian Fox and other firefighters were stamping out blazes behind the Tomasitas housing development. …
