Book clubs offer a cozy manner in which to discuss literature, current events and life

"Our Man in Havana," Graham Greene's satirical novel about a vacuum-cleaner salesman turned British spy, was written in 1958. But at a recent discussion of the book in a Santa Fe reading group, some members thought Greene could very well have been writing about the political climate in 2003.

"Everything was trumped up," said Marci Smith, referring to what she thinks are the Bush administration's inadequate arguments for war in Iraq. "That's what happened in this book."

Greene's novel was recently selected for discussion by one of Santa Fe's oldest reading groups, one that has been meeting monthly for about 25 years. In that time, the dozen or so members have read scores of books, both fiction and nonfiction, classic and modern, ranging from Henry James to Amy Tan. …
