Volunteers Visit Sites Every Month

The Santa Fe National Forest is looking for outdoor enthusiasts with a penchant for preserving the past.

As part of a volunteer program to help maintain and protect the numerous archaeological sites in and around the forest, officials are hoping to find a new group of volunteer site stewards for work beginning this fall.

One of just a handful of forests in the West known to employ the services of stewards, the Santa Fe is the perfect locale for such positions according to Terry Ballone.

"There are so many sites in the area that need attention," he said. "So many of them are so remotely located, so out in the middle of nowhere that someone could easily go out there with a jackhammer and nobody would hear it. …
