Citizens Jump to Action, Lend Hand in Fire Crisis.(State)

Mark McCluney said Tuesday started out to be a great day in Albuquerque -- a good day to take a walk, ride his bike or sit out on his front-porch hammock.

Then the smell of smoke told him the day was good for something else, too.

"It was a perfect day for a fire," said McCluney, a North Valley resident who was among hundreds told by police to leave their homes because of the threatening bosque fire.

By Wednesday, ashes and burned leaves needed to be swept off homes and patios closest to the bosque.

The dashboard on Janie Morris' new Honda CRV, parked off Campbell Road in the North Valley, was covered with a layer of white ash. …
