For the past 20 years, from Memorial Day through Balloon Fiesta, the Madrid Melodrama has entertained tourists and locals on the Turquoise Trail. The Engine House Theatre stage is built from salvaged railroad track and recycled relics in the old Locomotive Repair Building in Madrid. The original train track still runs in the back of the theater, and a rusting locomotive stands just behind the stage.

Now playing is the tale of good and evil, "The Desperado and the Dynamite" or "He Loved a Lawless Lady" by Albuquerque playwright Laine Conway.

In melodrama, which reached its zenith at the turn of the last century, emotions and gestures are exaggerated and plot is emphasized over characterization. …
