Fire Season Descends On Duke City Bosque.(Final)(Editorial)

It was a big fire for Albuquerque, but quick response, exceptional cooperation and coordination among governmental agencies kept Tuesday's Rio Grande bosque fire from being a lot worse than it could have been.

Then, as the sun began to set over the mesa on Wednesday, it got worse.

Two new fires of suspicious origin broke out further north along the bosque on both sides of the river, forcing more evacuations.

Mayor Martin Chavez said arson was a distinct possibility.

The combination of darkness and the intensity of the fire, with flames crowning trees and shooting a hundred feet into the air, meant there was no way to knock down this fire. …
