Blaze in the Bosque Sparks Sales of Fireworks.(Final)

Even as firefighters battled the bosque blaze Tuesday evening, people lined up to purchase fireworks.

Fireworks vendor Manny Amaya says Tuesday's fire sparked such an increase in sales that she had to extend her business hours well past sundown to accommodate buyers.

"We saw the smoke last night at about 5 p.m. and were going to shut down," Amaya said Wednesday from her sales spot at the intersection of Rio Bravo and Isleta SW, "but then we got a rush of people and stayed open until 9 p.m. People were afraid of a ban on fireworks and they were coming in to make sure they could get them for the Fourth of July."

Current restrictions in Albuquerque limit vendors to selling only fireworks that shoot less than 10 feet high in the air, spray less than a 3-feet radius, and are milder in sound than a cap-gun. …
