* Town's next episode of 100th birthday fun is July Fourth weekend

A big Fourth of July bash is in the works as Mountainair's lengthy 100th birthday celebration continues.

Community members have been planning Mountainair's centennial "Step Back in Time" celebrations for more than a year. The first celebration was held during Rancher's Day over Memorial Day weekend. The second burst of centennial nostalgia is planned in conjunction with the annual Firecracker Jubilee weekend July 4-6. The third is scheduled for Aug. 2-3 during the biannual Heritage Day celebration.

Smaller celebrations will be held in conjunction with the Annual Sunflower Festival on Aug. 30 and during a weekend of gallery tours scheduled for Oct. 11-12.

But the biggest birthday party of all is the Fourth of July celebration.

"This will be the most spectacular event in all of New Mexico this summer," said Bert Herrman, one of the centennial organizers. …
