* Doctors weigh the numbers when they consider moving here

The fact that New Mexico has much more affordable malpractice insurance than most of the country is a plus for attracting doctors, but it's not nearly enough to overcome physician shortages, local experts say.

Out-of-state physicians call a couple of times of week to explore relocating to New Mexico, said New Mexico Medical Society executive director Randy Marshall. "Almost every call starts with the malpractice climate," he said.

On that score, Marshall has good news.

Commercial medical malpractice premiums that rose 35 percent last year are up less than 14 percent this year, while premiums in some other states are rising at triple-digit rates. …
