African American Affairs Office Sponsors Event

The Office of African American Affairs held its second annual People of African Descent Tobacco Forum to warn people of the dangers of smoking to overall health.

Doris Fields, a health liaison from the New Mexico Department of Health, said blacks suffer disproportionately from chronic and preventable diseases compared to white Americans. She said of those diseases -- heart disease, cancer and stroke -- tobacco is a major contributor.

Alice Hoppes, director of the Office of African American Affairs, said she agrees that tobacco is a big health concern for blacks. …
